Looking to generate leads from Instagram in 2019? Then you’re not alone. The platform now has over 25 million active business accounts trying to be visible and grow their presence using the channel, but how many of them are genuinely creating solid leads? I suspect not many.
Over the past few years, Instagram’s growth has been so huge that it’s now seen as THE place to be on social media. Want the latest celebrity gossip? It’s got it. Want the latest fitness, beauty, fashion and foodie trends? It’s got it. Want to buy products and services across any sector? Then Instagram is the place to go to see them in action before you buy them (or don’t as the case may be).
It all happened in 2018 …
Last year Instagram made some big changes to the platform to make the channel easier to use for both businesses and customers alike. Here were some of the features they added.
- Clickable links for usernames and hashtags in your bio.
- Polls and Gifs in stories
- Instagram shoppable posts
- Comment controls
- Type mode and fonts for stories
- Mention stickers to tag accounts in stories
- Re-share Instagram posts to stories
- Upload bulk stories and videos to stories
All of these features, whether you like them or not, are very handy for businesses to use to generate leads, create engagement and reach new audiences. Want to know more? Here are 7 ways to generate leads using Instagram.
#1: Add a link to your profile bio
A quick win for generating leads using Instagram is to make sure your profile is fully optimised. In other words, it needs to give Instagram users all the information they need to decide whether or not they want to view your profile and/or visit your website.
In 150 characters or less you need to:
- Be clear who you are and what you offer
- Relay your key messages
- Explain why users should care about you
- Share your personality
- Use the right hashtags (if you want to use them that is)
AND more importantly …. add a link to your website. If you don’t have a specific lead magnet set up then send them to your products or services pages, your content page, i.e. blog, or create an introductory video about you for your website and direct them there so you can upsell or simply direct them to your mailing list and encourage them to sign up.
My point here is that you need place a link in your bio directing your audiences to an aspect of your business that adds genuine value. If you have a number of services, lead magnets or links to your website that you want to promote, do what I do on my profile and add a Link Tree so you can share multiple links. Just make sure you’re sharing something relevant, timely and valuable.
#2: Share Instagram stories with your audience
Do you like Instagram stories? I love them and could spend hours watching them and by the looks of things I’m not alone. They’re now hugely successful with over 400 million Instagrammers using them on a daily basis, but how can they help you generate leads for your business?
Well for starters, the stories function is a great way for you to connect with your followers on a new level giving them raw behind the scenes footage of your business. Instagram users love this. It helps them get to know you in a way that helps them buy into you and your products or services – literally!
A good way to do this is to use the ‘swipe up’ function. This is where you insert a link for users to click through to your lead magnet. The only issue with this feature is that it’s only available to business profiles with 10,000 followers or over (frustrating I know). If you have less followers than that (I know a lot of us do), simply add ‘link in bio’ to your story.
Another way to generate leads is to mention other users who are relevant to your story so they can add it to their story and share what you’re saying with their audience. This will help you gain new followers, but with a clear call to action can generate leads to your website.
#3: Share high quality images in your newsfeed
Let’s face it. Instagram is a visual platform so if want to attract attract visitors and keep your followers interested you need to make your newsfeed look amazing. Using high quality, on brand images will really help you create a good presence, build your following and generate the leads that you want to.
The thing with this is, we’re not all professional photographers are we? They know instinctively how to create beautiful images, but for those of us who aren’t brilliant at this it can be a challenge. My advice to you is to either hire a photographer who can take on brand images of you, your team, products and services or utilise image libraries.

#4: Share user-generated content
Do you have a business where customers regularly tag you when they’re using your products or services? Maybe they’re reading a book you’ve written or wearing clothes you sell or maybe they’re a member of your subscription service and are raving about you online. Whatever it is they share, make sure you have a dedicated section on your Instagram to shout out about it.
Why? Because it’s social proof that your product or service is good and it adds credibility to your brand showing that your customers are shouting about how good your product or service is without you having to do it.
You can create a hashtag that users can follow, a highlight reel for a story where you share the content or you can include it in your newsfeed and tag the person who shared it with a link to the product or service in your bio. This will help you get engagement and traffic to your website.
#5: Embrace Insta video features
Instagram stories, IGTV and Instagram Live all offer you the opportunity to connect with your audience through video. No matter what form of video you choose to use, there are a number of things you can do to generate leads. You can:
- Create a story IGTV broadcast or go live on a topic linked to your lead magnet.
- Include link or say ‘link in bio’ in the story or video.
- Add ‘Swipe up’ feature to your story if you have it.
- Create a highlight reel for your video story for your profile.
The aim of this is to drive traffic through to your lead magnet so the visitors can complete whatever action it is you want them to take.
#6: Include Call to actions (CTAs)
If you want to generate leads then you need to be very clear about what you actually want your followers or visitors to do. Call to actions will help you do that. Direct them to the link in your bio, another Instagram profile if it’s a collaboration, a hashtag if you want them to follow it. Whatever it is you want them to do, simply ask. Instagram users will decide whether or not it’s for them, but your job is to make it as easy and appealing to them as possible to make take action
#7: Advertise on Instagram
Instagram advertising may be something that doesn’t appeal to you, but if you create the right ad then you’ll get the traction you need to generate leads and convert followers to paying customers. This is something you can integrate into your Instagram strategy at minimal cost.
